Educational Therapy & Executive Function Coaching
Does school make your teenager anxious, frustrated, or upset? Do they avoid or put off doing their homework until the last minute? Are they struggling to keep up in class or getting into trouble at school? Do conversations about school frequently lead to arguments or tears?
Struggling in school can lead to all kinds of social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. This is especially true if a student has struggled repeatedly or for many years. Once students are stuck in this vicious cycle of academic and emotional challenges, it can be really hard for parents, caregivers, and teachers to help them overcome that cycle. That’s why I wrote Overcoming the School Trauma Cycle, and why I’m offering educational therapy to help families just like yours.
In educational therapy, we focus on developing strategies that will help the student get on a positive cycle of learning. Students will learn new skills, identify the strategies that work for their individual needs, and practice using them to gain confidence and achieve independence in learning and studying. These skills will help them thrive not only in school but also in whatever career path they pursue.
Students with ADHD, Autism, learning disabilities (like dyslexia), and mental health challenges can benefit from targeted, direct instruction in executive function skills. These are the skills that help students organize their materials (e.g., keep track of homework assignments), plan ahead for due dates, use learning strategies, break homework down into smaller steps, etc.
Skills we can target:
- Goal setting (short-term and long-term)
- Study skills and memorization tricks
- Organization
- Planning
- Strategies for getting started
- Strategies for getting it done
- How to make hard tasks more doable
- Time management
- Using accommodations (for students with IEPs and 504 Plans)
- Coping with past or current failure
- Developing positive self-talk and self-esteem
- Getting on a positive cycle of learning
Educational therapy is not a substitute for mental health counseling. Any underlying mental health disorders should be evaluated and treated by a licensed professional like a psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, or family doctor.

Rates
Sliding scale from $30-$100 per hour (pay what you can) for individual sessions or $20-$50 per hour for workshops. After our initial consultation, I will provide you with a suggested rate depending on your specific needs and number of sessions per week. Paying the suggested rate, or what you can afford, allows me to provide more affordable options for families who otherwise couldn’t afford services for their child.
