It seems like I am constantly buying laundry detergent (I don’t even have kids!); and even after switching to the “eco-friendly/skin-friendly” kind a couple of years ago, I still couldn’t help but think there must be a better option. It’s usually expensive to be good to the environment as well as to be good to yourself. But if you’re willing to learn something new, making your own laundry detergent is definitely cheaper and is super simple. Did I mention that it’s cheaper?

Ingredients

1 grated bar soap (we used ivory)

2 cups borax

2 cups washing soda

Directions

Put the bar soap into a food processor and grind into fine particles.

Then, combine all ingredients (grated soap, borax, and washing soda) and mix.

Store in a closed container.

Use 1/8 to 1/4 cup per load.

We made a small batch since this was our first time, but of course you can double or triple the recipe as desired. We haven’t used it yet, but I’m pretty excited to do laundry for once! This was the easiest homemade thing I have done. Assuming it works, I will absolutely continue making my own laundry detergent. I’ll keep you posted. You could also make liquid soap but it takes a little more effort. Anyone out there already making your own laundry soap? Do you use a different recipe?
